About ESG

ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) has now evolved into a comprehensive framework that includes key elements around environmental and social impact, as well as how governance structurescan be amended to maximize stakeholder well-being. ESG really went mainstream when the framework became an integral part of many institutional investors’ playbooks. There are a growing number of ESG rating agencies that assign ESG scores, as well as new and evolving reporting frameworks, all of which are improving the transparency and consistency of the ESG information that firms are reporting publicly (often called ESG disclosure).

Thus, ESG takes the holistic view that sustainability extends beyond justenvironmental issues. While the term ESG is often used in the context of investing, stakeholders include not just the investment community but also customers, suppliers, and employees, all of whom are increasingly interested in how sustainable an organization’s operations are. It is a management and analysis framework for addressing the risks and opportunities associated with changing environmental, social, and economic systems. It provides a lens for identifying and addressing how changing climate, stakeholder expectations, and business conditions on the ground impact a business and the stakeholders it depends on.

ESG mainly focuses on -

• ESG is a framework that helps stakeholders understand how an organization manages risks and opportunities around sustainability issues.
• ESG has evolved from other historical movements that focused on health and safety issues, pollution reduction, and corporate philanthropy.
• ESG has changed how capital allocation decisions are made by many of the largest financial services firms and asset managers in the world.
• An emerging class of ESG specialists is stepping into the industry and supporting both net zero and carbon neutrality goals.

Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA) under the ‘National Guidelines for Responsible Business Conduct (NGRBC), focusing on nine principles that largely relate to environmental, social and governance that ought to be demonstrated by all responsible corporates and excludes financial performance of companies. These principles are, in turn, based on United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals.

Educational institutions are ancillary but important to ESG ecosystem by providing research insights and trained human resources. There is ample scope of research to evaluate different dimensions of corporate sustainability, ESG integrations, impact assessment, new research methodology, and performance evaluation. On 22nd January 2022, SEBI proposed that ESG credit rating providers shall have at least one specialist related to data analysist, finance, law, IT and sustainability. So, ESG is providing new opportunities for academic institutions to launch new ESG courses or training programme as per the requirements of ESG ecosystem stakeholders.

Executive training program

ESG or Environment, Social and Governance, is an increasingly relevant business topic of strategic and operational importance. Although in practice in India for at least 20 years, ESG is gradually being mainstreamed across sectors. ESG is becoming a necessary condition to do business, as regulators bring in compliance requirements, business partners try to derisk supply chains, and financers try to maximize value on investments.

In the past five years, the Indian regulators have introduced local requirements and frameworks for ESG that are aligned to global standards. The Ministry of Corporate Affairs introduced the National Guidelines for Responsible Business Conduct (NGRBC), based on which SEBI introduced a reporting mechanism called the Business Responsibility and Sustainability Report (BRSR). The NGRBC are a set of nine principles that all enterprises in India are expected to follow. The BRSR is mandated for 1,000 largest companies on the BSE / NSE. That said, the large companies are required report on their supply chain.

Effectively, BRSR is usually for enterprises of any scale and ownership in India. It is a useful document to claim ESG compliance and have it readily available when asked for by a regulator, business partner or financer.

The training is designed to help participants understand ESG from a practitioner's perspective. It is focused on BRSR to help participants understand every principle and indicator in the reporting framework. The training methodology is a combination of lectures, discussions, and practical exercises.

About Faculty

Mr. Sachin Joshi

Sachin Joshi is a freelance sustainability consultant with over 20 years in sustainable business. He has helped many large and mid-sized companies with ESG strategies and reporting. He has also been on government committees that oversaw the development of NGRBC and BRSR. He has trained over 5,000 managers on ESG and related issues. He is currently Advisor to the Gulf Petrochemicals and Chemicals Association in Dubai; previously he has been Policy Head of B20 during Saudi Arabia G20 2020, and led Confederation of Indian Industry’s Centre of Excellence for Sustainable Development.
