Expert Session on “Project Management in Engineering”

A session has been conducted on “Project Management in Engineering” dated March 3, 2020 (Tuesday) from 2:00-4:00 PM at SOT auditorium, GSFCU. The speaker of the session was Mr. Alok Singh, Joint General Manager, L&T Vadodara with almost 25 years of experience in Project and Supply Chain Management.  The speaker is a Project Management and Process Improvement Professional helping companies to optimize systems. He has a Domain expertise in improvement of Procurement Processes and Supply Chain Processes. Also he possess an Extensive Domain experience in EPC project execution for Cement, Power and Water industry. He was associated in Cement and Power Industry with reputed organizations e.g L&T, Reliance, Prism Cement & Dalmia Bharat Group over the career span of 25 years.

The expert talk was useful for all faculties and students of Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Civil Engineering. Since the topic was Project management so the target audience was mainly 3rd and 4th year students of above mentioned branches as it was not relevant to 1st and 2nd year students because major/core subjects are not yet covered for those semesters. Students response was good as around 100 students were present during 2 hours of session. 

The expert session was organised by Ms. Priyanka Pandya, Assistant Professor, Chemical Engineering. With the objective to provide participants with:

• An awareness of the importance of applying good practice Project Management in projects of any size.
• An understanding of essential elements, including the Leadership Role of the Project Manager, Project Planning, Risk Management and Stakeholder Engagement.
• An understanding of the principle elements of design control to be applied within projects.

The session was started with felicitating the speaker with flower bouquet by Dean, SOT “Dr. Saurabh Shah”. Few points which were covered pertaining to the objective of session are:

• Project Management Introduction
• Common Project Terms: Deliverables, Milestones, Tasks, Risks, Issues, Gantt Chart, Stakeholder etc. Along with that few exercises have been asked to students:
• Key Points in Project Set-up and Definition: Create Project Management Plan (PMP), Be clear of scope and objectives, Establish clear statement of what is to be done (Work Breakdown Structure -WBS), Establish Risks to be Managed, Establish Costs and Durations, Establish Resources Required
• Project Risk Management: Identify Risks, Assess likelihood and impact, Rank risks and prioritize, Define risk management approach & actions, Implement actions, Monitor & review.

In addition to that HSE points were discussed that safety & environmental issues receive proper consideration as design develops: 

• Involve the right people from the start
• Systematically identify issues – Hazards/Risks, Environmental Aspects & Impacts
• Carry out rigorous reviews at each design stage
• Control Design Changes  

A case study of Project Management of 3960 MW Sasan Ultra Mega Power Project (July 2, 2014) was also explained to target audience, by speaker.

After the session the Q&A session was also conducted and then the session was concluded by presenting the GSFCU memento to “Ms. Alok Singh” by the organizer “Ms. Priyanka Pandya”.
